Degenerative Eye Conditions are like most neurodegenerative diseases – they cannot be cured, but the symptoms can often be much reduced through acupuncture.  This includes conditions such as Usher Syndrome, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration.

Is there anything you can do to help yourself?

YES……Exercise….

People tell us all the time that their vision improves when they exercise and it gets worse when they don’t.

A lot of eye issues are routed in the function of the circulatory system, which can result in restrictions to the periphery of the body and the eyes and the brain where the visual cortex is located.

Our eyes are made up of cells like the rest of the body that needs nutrients, oxygen, efficient waste management.  These processes can be inefficient and poorly managed in the body and can be improved.

Cardiovascular exercise is great for getting fresh new blood pumping out to extremities (including the head where the brain and eyes are located), the blood will carry the oxygen, nutrients and make the waste removal of carbon dioxide, toxins, acids, and cellular waste products that we need to disperse more efficiently.

Exercise can be cardiovascular, strength and resistance, stretching, dance, tai chi, swimming, cycling, conditioning.  A combination of these types of exercises is great, but typically do whichever form of exercise that you love and makes you feel good.  But as a reference point, try to get your heart rate increased for about 20 mins 5 times per week.

Exercise is a great way of managing stress, keeping our circulatory system functioning well, helping the brain function, and making you feel better in yourself.

Remember, your eyes are part of your body –  the healthier we keep our bodies, the healthier we keep our eyes.
